Does Microsoft’s Aquisition of Skype create a problem?
Cisco have commented in their blog that they believe that the Microsoft and Skype merger will be the beginning of a proprietary VOIP service, presumably with Microsoft leveraging their domination of the desktop market to become the mainstream provider of VOIP and video conference communications of the future.
Cisco argue with some validity, that keeping the standards on which these services are built, open is critical. Maintaining open communication standards allows more creativity, innovation and ultimately enhanced service. If Microsoft seeks to squeeze this open-ness then I believe an alternative standard will emerge and be adopted by the masses; probably some time after Microsoft has made a vast amount of money in the communications arena….
